Cancer Center Membership Guidelines

Research Membership

This category is designed for individuals whose major focus is research; this criteria meets the guidelines recommended by the National Cancer Institute for its Cancer Center Support Grant. Requirements include the following:
Academic appointment to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences

Principal investigator of cancer-related, peer-reviewed funded research,
or
Scientific leader of an Cancer Institute shared resource,
or
Administrative leader of the Cancer Institute, as approved by the Director
Recent cancer-related publications (last 3 years) in peer-reviewed professional journals

Demonstrated commitment to participate in one or more of the Cancer Institute’s research programs, identified here.
New or junior faculty who are not yet principal investigators of peer-reviewed funded research may apply for Provisional Research Membership, at the approval of the Cancer Institute Director.

Contributing Membership

Academic appointment to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences

Named co-investigator or collaborator on cancer-related, peer-reviewed funded research
OR
Principal investigator of cancer-related intramural funding (ie, Breast Cancer Research Fund, Tobacco Settlement Fund, Medical Research Endowment, others)
OR
Demonstrated focus on cancer-related research but is not a PI or Co-I
Demonstrated commitment to participate in one or more of the Cancer Institute’s research programs, identified here.

Clinical Membership

Academic appointment to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences

Significant professional involvement in cancer care, clinical research, education, or control

Affiliate Membership

Professional staff member of UAMS or Arkansas Children’s Hospital who contributes to the overall mission of the Cancer Institute through patient care, research, education or cancer control
OR
Investigator from outside the UAMS system who collaborates in cancer research with an Cancer Institute member

Research Programs

Research and contributing members must actively participate in one or more of the Cancer Institute’s research programs. Participation will be defined broadly but will ideally include developing new research projects in collaboration with other program members; attendance at Cancer Institute program meetings, sponsored conferences, seminars, and other forums; authorship of cancer-related manuscripts with other program members; etc.

Research programs include the following:

1) Aging and Cancer
2) Cancer Survivorship
3) Cell Differentiation and Signaling
4) Molecular Signatures and Cancer Therapeutics
5) Multiple Myeloma and Bone
