Adult cardiothoracic surgery encompasses surgical treatment of diseases of the heart, including cardiac transplantation, the chest blood vessels, the lungs and the esophagus. Cardiothoracic surgeons also treat other conditions related to the chest wall (masses, tumors, or deformities), the diaphragm (GERD and hiatal and diaphragmatic hernias) and the thoracic outlet, like excessive sweating and compression of the nerves of the blood vessels.
